Whether AK, AR, surplus automatic or bolt gun, the sling can provide significantly more stability in almost any shooting situation. If you have time to use a rifle, you have time to use the sling with these methods. After all, a slow hit is better than a fast miss. What the sling will do is to more solidly “lock” you in with your rifle, increasing real-world accuracy. Slings come attached to firearms in two basic configurations: on bottom of the piece, or on the left side. Most arms with the sling on the left will be military surplus, and we’ll address them in a moment. To use any sling, it must be adjusted snugly around the upper supporting arm. If you’re right handed, you will put your left arm through the sling and adjust it for as little looseness as you can get. Then, wrap your left forearm back around the sling and re-grasp the fore-end. Some adjustment of tension can be made by moving the supporting hand forward or back on the fore-end. You do, however, want to be careful to not put too much tension on the sling, as this can slightly warp the stock enough to alter point of impact.

Another helpful hint is a drill highpower shooters use to achieve Natural Point of Aim. Get into whichever position you’re shooting in, aim your rifle, close your eyes and breathe naturally three times. If your position’s good, the sights will be very close to where you had them before you closed your eyes. If not, adjust til the sights remain on target. One secret of precision shooting is to not “wrestle” the rifle into position, to use bone to support the piece instead of muscle. I mentioned side mounted slings and the technique is slightly different for these. Mostly found on the Swiss K31 Schmidt-Rubin or any of a number of Mauser rifles, the side-mount sling is a compromise made to allow mounted and foot soldiers to use the same rifle; the United States is one of few nations that use the rifle sling as a shooting aid. In most nations, the sling is a carrying strap and no consideration is made in stock design of tension from a tight sling. That said, the Swiss occasionally use the K31′s side-mounted sling in 300 meter shooting. This is accomplished in a similar manner to what I described for the bottom-mount sling, only the sling passes around the left upper arm and the forearm is not twisted back through. The K31 stock is not particularly rigid, and care must be exercised to not bend the stock toward the left. With this rudimentary system, I won my first shooting trophy with a K31, beating out M14s and AR-15s. Try these methods out; there aren’t any benchrests in real-world shooting situations and using the sling may well prove the difference between a hit and a miss.
